The Science of Shopping

Posted in Retail by wiseguyrussell on March 6, 2008

I spoke to a guy named Eric last night, actually he is the cousin of one of my best friends Avril, His job is the science of shopping! He actually gets paid to know what shoppers are thinking about! I learnt the following facts

Tesco spend millions a year laying the shop out in ways to get you sucked into buying there stuff

They angle the aisles every so slightly in order to get you to follow the store like sheep, this also means you look at all the products face on

They will pipe the vent from the bakery from the back of the store to the front, so when you come in, you smell the bread, get hungry and buy more stuff

The retailers force the suppliers to do the tastings in store, and then make the suppliers buy the stock from the retailer at full price, so even if 100 people taste and no one buys, the shop still makes money

So next time you are in tesco, DONT follow the way they want to you go round the store, go your own way, start with frozen and the heavy stuff cause it makes more sense than to put the fruit in your trolley first and squash it like they want you to
